EAN Organising Meeting on Saturday, June 18 from 12-5pm (Birkbeck College)

Where? Birkbeck College, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HX

When? Saturday June 18, 12-5pm

We have invited delegates of national organisations, EAN groups, trade union branches, campaigning groups, local anti-cuts groups as well as individuals who have played a role in the struggle to defend education as well as fight for an alternative vision to our national organising meeting in London on Saturday, June 18 from 12-5pm.

This vision is crucial as ever before. As A.C. Grayling and his friends aim to set up their ‘rejects school’ (which will cost £18 000 pounds in tuition fees a year) it has become clear that the students’ and trade union movement will have to provide answers which can combat the full marketisation and privatisation of our education system.

Whilst post-1992 institutions such as London Met are having their Philosophy and Humanities departments viciously attacked and lecturers’ pensions are coming under attack, we also see a gear shift in the fact that up to one million public sector workers will be going on strike on June 30.

Broadening and deepening the networks that the Education Activist Network has built over its one and a half years of existence will be crucial in advancing the struggle to take back our education. The national organising meeting will provide analytical discussion as well as space for planning, organising and collaboration.

Following points of discussion have been raised so far

  1. Strike for our future on June 30
  2. AC Grayling and the NewCollegeofHumanities
  3. Demonstration at the Tory Party Conference in Manchesteron Sunday October 2nd
  4. National EAN Conference on Saturday October 29th

This national organising meeting has been agreed upon at the last EAN steering committee meeting.
