Report from National Demonstration #2

By Bill McEvoy

Today’s protest brought together students, school pupils, activists and academics from all round the country. Over 10,000 marched from the University of London Union in Russell Sq to the City of London. The demo was peaceful, lively and vocal, with chants, drumming, music and a great atmosphere. All this despite repressive and provocative over-policing. The police, often in riot gear, blocked the entry of striking electricians, kettled students and strikers and created a threatening and aggressive atmosphere. Demonstrators bounced back with more chants and calls for solidarity between students and workers, many of whom cheered us on from bridges and offices. Billy Bragg and others performed at St Paul’s, to support the demo, alongside Occupy LSX. This march in defence of Higher Education is the first step in ongoing resistance to a vicious government intent on attacking universities and the welfare state in general. We will fight them every step of the way.
