Education Activist Network’s Statement of Support for Chile’s Student Activists
November 21, 2011 1 Comment
We the undersigned write in full support of your remarkable campaign for free, public and universal education in Chile. In the last few months, in protest against the ongoing privatisation of education, Chilean students have barricaded themselves into hundreds of schools and campuses, blocking access to staff and administrators. At the same time, the Confederation of Chilean Student Federations has organised dozens of massive rallies, attended by hundreds of thousands of people. While your resistance has been welcomed with solidarity action by trade unionists, the government has responded with police brutality, mass arrests and restrictions on civil liberties.
Your tenacity and inventiveness is an inspiration to all of us who share your determination to reverse the privatisation of public goods, and to restore free and universal education to its proper status as a basic social right.
